So I saw Serenity again today, for the first time in a few months.
It's not a perfect movie, but it's sure pretty damn good. Some of the things that bugged me about it the first time around bugged me less now... but I'll make a different post for talking about spoilery things.
I brought my mom and dad, who hadn't seen any Firefly, along with me, and they both liked it. This wasn't too surprising... My dad likes a lot of scifi (he was actually watching the first couple of episodes of Farscape today in syndication since he missed them the first time around), and he likes movies with good one-liners, which Serenity has. My mom isn't much on scifi (and kept trying to talk to my dad while he was watching Farscape), but she likes some, and I had guessed Serenity would probably fall into that some.
The theater was only about half full though (if that) at a 7:10 showing, which made me kind of sad. (It was in the biggest theater, but still...) From what I noticed (the movie kind of sucked me in), the people there seemed to like it though, they all laughed at the jokes and gasped at appropriate places.
Hopefully the ads for the movie this week will be full of all of the nice soundbites from critics and not suck like the current commercials, and lots of people will go see it and there will be sequels and things will be happy.
Oh, and Nathan Fillion? Is a liar. (Someone asked him at the Q&A in May whether the theme song would be in the movie, and he said kindly but somewhat forecefully that it wouldn't, Serenity is not Firefly, Firefly was awesome but it's done, and Serenity is different. Which is a very very valid point that Firefly fans need to keep in mind, but Ballad of Serenity is so totally at the end of the credits.) ;)

When we were leaving, there were some girls who had obviously never seen Firefly talking about the movie in the ladies' room. It seemed like they really enjoyed it, but I had to hold in my laughter when one of them said she thought Mal was played by "Justin" Bateman and was surprised to see the name Nathan somethingorother.
I'm glad I didn't go into the movie expecting it to be rip-roaringly funny, though. It seems that ruined the experience a bit for Stu.
I've got my fingers crossed for a couple more.

Still, on the plus side, it should be number 1 for the weekend.
I went to see it yesterday, and the theatre wasn't very full (but it was also a 4:15 showing, so that's not entirely suprising), and the people there mostly seemed to be non-browncoats who reacted quite well to the movie. There was a guy in the washroom who asked his son if he knew who Wash was, and the kid said, "The guy from A Knight's Tale" and I was thinking, "Nooo... he's Wash." ;) The kid then went on to ask why he had the dinosaurs "glued" to his console, and the dad didn't know...
All this while I'm wearing this shirt.
